Life in the Cemetery

As autumn leaves start to fall, the Kennesaw City Cemetery is hosting the annual Life in the Cemetery tour. On the last weekend before Halloween, guests will have the unique opportunity to explore history in a way that’s equal parts educational and entertaining.

The Life in the Cemetery tour offers a one-hour guided walk where guests can meet some of Kennesaw’s most colorful past residents, portrayed by local volunteers. These figures—many with ties to the military—step out of history to share stories of their lives, with a few surprising moments of humor thrown in.

This year’s highlights include a Civil War veteran who survived a wartime injury and Cobb County’s most decorated World War I hero. As guests move from one resting place to another, the voices of history echo through the cemetery offering glimpses into the lives that helped shape our area.

The event takes place at Kennesaw City Cemetery, located at 3000 Cemetery Street. It’s a fitting venue for a historical deep dive, given that the cemetery has seen the area’s transformation from its days as Big Shanty during the Civil War era to the modern city it is today.

The tour covers a variety of surfaces, from dirt and gravel paths to grassy hills, so sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Attendees should also be prepared for uneven terrain and navigating around old headstones and family plot markers. Also note that pets are not allowed and the last tour of the evening ventures out after dark.

The event is organized by the Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to maintaining and restoring the historic cemetery. The City of Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Commission has also joined forces to help bring this one-of-a-kind tour to life.  All proceeds from the event go directly toward preserving this historic site for future generations to enjoy.
