General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General U.S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The terms Grant extended served as a template for negotiations with the various Confederate forces continuing to offer resistance. After four years of fighting, the American Civil War – unlike similar conflicts in other nations – ended with the victor focusing on reunification instead of annihilation. Civil War historian Michael K. Shaffer will discuss the various surrender ceremonies at war’s end.
